Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. If your loft is not properly insulated, you could be losing up to 25% of the heat created in your home and be missing out on savings of up to £155 per year on your heating bills. All private households qualify for a loft insulation grant of 50% to 100% depending on the existing efficiency of the property. If a contribution towards the cost is required, it will be in the region of £49 to £199. Loft insulation grant funding comes from the six main energy suppliers and is backed by the uk government. It is the occupier of the property who qualifies for the grant and they do not have to be paid back.
There are several schemes available in different areas of the country, you or anyone living in the property do not necessarily need to be over a certain age or receiving benefits to qualify. What’s on offer and how do I get a boiler grant?
As with the boiler grants you may not be offered a grant that covers the entire cost of the insulation but a substantial portion of it. Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

Under the green homes grant scheme, homeowners in england can apply for vouchers worth up to two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of their home – the maximum contribution will be £5,000, or for those on lower incomes, a 100% grant up to £10,000 will be available for certain work. The only limitation on the delivery of the scheme is that you must own the property to be treated or rent it privately and have the landlord’s permission to undertake the work. What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. The map below from the building research establishment shows the areas that are most at risk of ‘wind-driven rain’ in blue and dark blue.
A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.
You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.

If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
