The eco scheme legally requires the main energy suppliers to install energy efficient technologies such as cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to domestic households in the uk. If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.
What free insulation can I get?
Some suppliers offer free insulation if you’re eligible under the eco scheme. For example, you may be eligible if you’re on government benefits. But suppliers will also take into account how much your home will benefit from insulation.
The green homes grant scheme will also provide free insulation to households in the lowest-income groups (you will need to be in receipt of certain government benefits). If you don’t qualify for this, the scheme will also provide vouchers for at least two-thirds of the cost of some types of insulation for homeowners in england. To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
Loft insulation is installed on the floor of the loft. Blankets of mineral wool (glass fibre) are rolled out between and then across the joists. The latest government recommendation is a depth of 11 inches or 270mm. Unlike roof insulation, free government-backed loft insulation grants are available now under the energy companies obligation (eco).
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Not everyone is eligible and the system couldn’t exactly be called simple, but it’s been a cold hard winter so if you think you might qualify for a government grant to insulate your loft, then we’re here to help.

Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. The recommended level of loft insulation for a typical property in the uk is 270mm, so there may be room for improvement if yours is dramatically less than that.

You cannot claim a green homes grant voucher towards the cost of a measure which has also had funding under the energy company obligation ( eco ). You can claim both eco and green homes grant as long as they are each for different measures – for example loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Fuel poverty can cause vulnerable and low income households to live in cold, unhealthy homes that are expensive to keep warm and increase levels of debt. Braintree district council welcomes the new local authority flexible eligibility powers for energy company obligation (eco) affordable warmth grant funding as a means to help address this issue. Eligible households can apply to any participating energy firm – not just the home’s supplier – to get a free home assessment. What’s on offer and how do I get a boiler grant?
As with the boiler grants you may not be offered a grant that covers the entire cost of the insulation but a substantial portion of it. If this is the case you will be told how much you would need to contribute before deciding to go ahead; you’re under no pressure to agree to anything you cannot afford.
The scottish and uk governments, local authorities and energy suppliers offer a range of financial measures, usually in the form of grants, loans or incentives. Financial help may be:
available for certain types of energy efficient improvements – sometimes the financial help is targeted at certain improvements, such as boilers or loft insulation
means tested – you may need to be receiving certain benefits to qualify for the financial help
dependant on where you live in scotland – some types of financial support might only be available in some areas of scotland.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. Once you have made your insulation application then our friendly uk team will discuss this with you.
In some cases, ‘top up’ improvements will be allowed such as additional loft insulation up to the recommended level or solid wall insulation for other walls where a wall has been previously insulated, but replacements are not included. For low-carbon heating systems to be installed, the property will need to have adequate insulation(e. G. Wall and loft). If this insulation is not already in situ, it can installed as part of a package. Secondary green homes grants are available (as long as primary work is also being completed)for:.
If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

The council is currently working with a local contractor and scottish power to offer grants for cavity and loft insulation if you live in a privately owned property. Subject to eligibility aid maybe also available for room in the roof or internal wall insulation if the property is suitable and the householder is in receipt of an energy company obligation eligibility benefit. A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
Why has cavity wall insulation been installed inappropriately?
A grant of up to 25% can be claimed towards the cost of external wall insulation. Prices typically range from £7,000 to £15,000. Energylink can arrange a free survey and quote from an accredited local installer. Free external wall insulation is also available if you live in kw, iv or ph and do not have mains gas. External wall insulation is normally installed in properties that have solid brick or concrete walls. It can also be fitted to homes with cavity walls that are not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
