According to the energy saving trust loft insulation of a detached house can cost anything around £400. With eco3 funding you can have loft insulation for free. In addition, the chart below shows statistics from the energy saving trust (2018) on average annual energy bills savings according to your house type. Loft insulation is a win-win for you all the year round. During colder months, it keeps the heat in, and in the warmer months, external heat cannot enter your home, keeping it cooler.
What free insulation can I get?
Some suppliers offer free insulation if you’re eligible under the eco scheme. For example, you may be eligible if you’re on government benefits. But suppliers will also take into account how much your home will benefit from insulation.
The green homes grant scheme will also provide free insulation to households in the lowest-income groups (you will need to be in receipt of certain government benefits). If you don’t qualify for this, the scheme will also provide vouchers for at least two-thirds of the cost of some types of insulation for homeowners in england. All private households qualify for a loft insulation grant of 50% to 100% depending on the existing efficiency of the property. If a contribution towards the cost is required, it will be in the region of £49 to £199. Loft insulation grant funding comes from the six main energy suppliers and is backed by the uk government. It is the occupier of the property who qualifies for the grant and they do not have to be paid back.
There are several schemes available in different areas of the country, you or anyone living in the property do not necessarily need to be over a certain age or receiving benefits to qualify. If someone does get any qualifying benefit it will usually mean automatic qualification, we can let you know and confirm this when you contact us. What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?

It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.
You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.
Loft insulation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective methods of conserving heat in your property. It is an effective insulator for at least 40 years and when properly installed, could save you up to £225 per year in energy bills. Generally, loft spaces that are easily accessible and that do not have damp or condensation problems are best suited for loft insulation. If your loft has these issues, they will need to be corrected before insulation can be installed.
If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
