If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.

If you are on benefits or a low income family you will also qualify for a free insulation grant under the government’s energy company obligation (eco) and you not only will save money of your heating bill you will also have your insulation fitted for free!.
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Not everyone is eligible and the system couldn’t exactly be called simple, but it’s been a cold hard winter so if you think you might qualify for a government grant to insulate your loft, then we’re here to help.

If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. If you are not entitled to a grant, energylink can still arrange for you to receive a free survey and quote. Please see our internal wall insulation page for more information.
Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation. It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. See below for further details. During a home assessment, your property will be examined to see what energy efficiency measures are already in place. New properties are generally well insulated, for example, but older homes may suffer from poor loft insulation and have cavity walls without any insulation installed.

The scheme is one of the most popular free insulation schemes in the uk and allows households across the uk to have free cavity wall insulation installed to create warmer, more energy-efficient homes. the best way to see if you can get free attic insulation is to apply for a grant, but unlike boiler grants, the grant cannot be offered to cover the full cost of installing cavity wall insulation in your home. Those who wish to insulate cavity walls will receive ps250, while those who wish to install them will receive only ps100 or up to ps500 or a maximum of ps1000. The best thing about the free promotion for attic insulation is that you don’t have to have cavities in the wall that wouldn’t have been so easy to insulate.

What’s on offer and how do I get a boiler grant?
As with the boiler grants you may not be offered a grant that covers the entire cost of the insulation but a substantial portion of it. If this is the case you will be told how much you would need to contribute before deciding to go ahead; you’re under no pressure to agree to anything you cannot afford.
Insulation grants could help fund much-needed home improvements. If you qualify, we’d be happy to help you apply for a range of home energy efficiency grants. We also offer finance arrangements to help spread the cost of installing your insulation. Depending on your circumstances, the new government-backed eco scheme could fully-fund your loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. In some cases, an eco grant can be used towards the cost of installing solid wall insulation and even fund a replacement boiler.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. Each application depends on your circumstances and the energy improvements that can be made to your home. Under the green homes grant scheme, homeowners in england can apply for vouchers worth up to two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of their home – the maximum contribution will be £5,000, or for those on lower incomes, a 100% grant up to £10,000 will be available for certain work. For example, if a homeowner of a semi-detached or end-terrace home installed cavity wall and floor insulation, costing around £4,000, the homeowner would pay just £1,320 – with the government paying £2,680. Doing so could save the owner over £200 annually on their bills and reduce their carbon footprint by cutting 700 kg of co2 a year from their home alone.
The only limitation on the delivery of the scheme is that you must own the property to be treated or rent it privately and have the landlord’s permission to undertake the work. Improving your cavity wall and loft insulation can reduce your energy bills on average by £300 per annum. How much money can you save from insulating your home?
according to the energy saving trust, having your cavity walls and loft insulated properly could save you up to £565 a year, depending on your energy prices as well as your energy consumption. Where and how does heat actually leave my home?
most heat loss in your home occurs through walls or the roof, but it’s also lost through windows, gaps around the door and through the floor. How does home insulation work?
home insulation material has been designed to slow heat flow. In simpler terms, the material has been designed so that heat cannot easily pass through it and escape.
It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.
You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.
Loft insulation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective methods of conserving heat in your property. It is an effective insulator for at least 40 years and when properly installed, could save you up to £225 per year in energy bills. Generally, loft spaces that are easily accessible and that do not have damp or condensation problems are best suited for loft insulation. If your loft has these issues, they will need to be corrected before insulation can be installed.
If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free (subject to survey) including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Boiler replacements are also included on this scheme (subject to eligibility).
