Loft insulation is installed on the floor of the loft. Blankets of mineral wool (glass fibre) are rolled out between and then across the joists. The latest government recommendation is a depth of 11 inches or 270mm. Unlike roof insulation, free government-backed loft insulation grants are available now under the energy companies obligation (eco).
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Not everyone is eligible and the system couldn’t exactly be called simple, but it’s been a cold hard winter so if you think you might qualify for a government grant to insulate your loft, then we’re here to help.

Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. If you are not entitled to a grant, energylink can still arrange for you to receive a free survey and quote. Please see our internal wall insulation page for more information.

You cannot claim a green homes grant voucher towards the cost of a measure which has also had funding under the energy company obligation ( eco ). You can claim both eco and green homes grant as long as they are each for different measures – for example loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

How can I check if cavity wall insulation is right for my home?
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

Generally, loft spaces that are easily accessible and that do not have damp or condensation problems are best suited for loft insulation. If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free (subject to survey) including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Blackpool council is working with local authorities in lancashire to help households access funding for energy-related improvements to their homes. If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.
If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.

It’s all about reducing carbon emissions. The gas and electricity companies have a legal obligation to reduce carbon emissions. This is know as the energy company’s obligation, eco for short. When an insulation job is carried out, the amount of carbon emissions saved is calculated. The actual amount saved will depend on the type of property – terraced, semi-detached, detached, etc. It also takes into account the number of bedrooms and the fuel you use to heat your home. These carbon emissions savings are sold to one of the gas and electricity companies. And that’s how it is funded.
