Neither british gas, sse nor scottish power currently offers free insulation or boilers. Some companies’ schemes are currently on hold while the legislation behind them changes. They are backed by the energy companies obligation (eco).
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Not everyone is eligible and the system couldn’t exactly be called simple, but it’s been a cold hard winter so if you think you might qualify for a government grant to insulate your loft, then we’re here to help.

Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. the energy company obligation (eco) is an obligation on energy suppliers aimed at helping households cut their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by installing energy saving measures. Following the spring 2018 consultation, the government set out in its response that eco3 will fully focus on affordable warmth – low income, vulnerable and fuel poor households.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. What’s included with the grant?
Your home may qualify for free loft insulation in scotland if you claim specific benefits or tax credits. Installing loft and cavity wall insulation is the most effective way of reducing energy bills. Government grants for free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation in scotland are accessible via the energy company obligation (eco) scheme. This is an environmental program which aims to lower carbon emissions by making scottish homes more energy-efficient. How do insulation grants work?

If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

Under the green homes grant scheme, homeowners in england can apply for vouchers worth up to two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of their home – the maximum contribution will be £5,000, or for those on lower incomes, a 100% grant up to £10,000 will be available for certain work. For example, if a homeowner of a semi-detached or end-terrace home installed cavity wall and floor insulation, costing around £4,000, the homeowner would pay just £1,320 – with the government paying £2,680. Doing so could save the owner over £200 annually on their bills and reduce their carbon footprint by cutting 700 kg of co2 a year from their home alone.
The only limitation on the delivery of the scheme is that you must own the property to be treated or rent it privately and have the landlord’s permission to undertake the work. Improving your cavity wall and loft insulation can reduce your energy bills on average by £300 per annum. Having your home insulated properly is also a requirement for additional home improvement grants like the renewable heat incentive (rhi) or the

most heat loss in your home occurs through walls or the roof, but it’s also lost through windows, gaps around the door and through the floor. How does home insulation work?
home insulation material has been designed to slow heat flow. In simpler terms, the material has been designed so that heat cannot easily pass through it and escape.
A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.
You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.
If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free (subject to survey) including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Boiler replacements are also included on this scheme (subject to eligibility). If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.
If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
