Free insulation grants are available to install cavity wall insulation, internal wall insulation, loft insulation and room in roof insulation. All private uk householders, in receipt of a qualifying income or disability-related benefit can qualify. We can also help with grants of up to 25% for external wall insulation. You do not currently need to be receiving benefits to qualify. External wall free insulation is also available in the kw, iv and ph areas of scotland, as long as the property is not on the gas network.

Neither british gas, sse nor scottish power currently offers free insulation or boilers. Some companies’ schemes are currently on hold while the legislation behind them changes. They are backed by the energy companies obligation (eco).
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. If this is the case you will be told how much you would need to contribute before deciding to go ahead; you’re under no pressure to agree to anything you cannot afford.
Insulation grants could help fund much-needed home improvements. If you qualify, we’d be happy to help you apply for a range of home energy efficiency grants. We also offer finance arrangements to help spread the cost of installing your insulation. Depending on your circumstances, the new government-backed eco scheme could fully-fund your loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. In some cases, an eco grant can be used towards the cost of installing solid wall insulation and even fund a replacement boiler.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. The map below from the building research establishment shows the areas that are most at risk of ‘wind-driven rain’ in blue and dark blue.
Suppliers can charge for improvements in some unusual circumstances. If the installation requires a lot of extra work – like putting up scaffolding for external insulation or removing old insulation – they may charge or part charge for the extra cost. The good news is that having the assessment is free and no obligation. If there are costs, you’ll still save in comparison to doing it yourself, and continue to save on bills once it’s done – but it’s your choice whether to accept them or go without.
It’s all about reducing carbon emissions. The gas and electricity companies have a legal obligation to reduce carbon emissions. This is know as the energy company’s obligation, eco for short. When an insulation job is carried out, the amount of carbon emissions saved is calculated. The actual amount saved will depend on the type of property – terraced, semi-detached, detached, etc. It also takes into account the number of bedrooms and the fuel you use to heat your home. These carbon emissions savings are sold to one of the gas and electricity companies. And that’s how it is funded.
