The eco scheme legally requires the main energy suppliers to install energy efficient technologies such as cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to domestic households in the uk. If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.
Households can apply for loft insulation grants when they have an uninsulated loft space or insulted with less than 100mm (4 inches)

Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. What’s on offer and how do I get a boiler grant?
As with the boiler grants you may not be offered a grant that covers the entire cost of the insulation but a substantial portion of it. If this is the case you will be told how much you would need to contribute before deciding to go ahead; you’re under no pressure to agree to anything you cannot afford.
Insulation grants could help fund much-needed home improvements. If you qualify, we’d be happy to help you apply for a range of home energy efficiency grants. We also offer finance arrangements to help spread the cost of installing your insulation. Depending on your circumstances, the new government-backed eco scheme could fully-fund your loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. In some cases, an eco grant can be used towards the cost of installing solid wall insulation and even fund a replacement boiler.
The scheme has two categories of home improvements: primary and secondary. Homeowners are only eligible for a secondary grant if they are also receiving a primary grant. Primary green homes grants grants will be available to homeowners installing:

in some cases, ‘top up’ improvements will be allowed such as additional loft insulation up to the recommended level or solid wall insulation for other walls where a wall has been previously insulated, but replacements are not included. If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
