there is still time to benefit from free insulation measures in Burscough and surrounding counties as part of the government’s energy company obligation (eco) scheme. External wall free insulation is also available in the kw, iv and ph areas of scotland, as long as the property is not on the gas network.
What free insulation can I get?
Some suppliers offer free insulation if you’re eligible under the eco scheme. For example, you may be eligible if you’re on government benefits. But suppliers will also take into account how much your home will benefit from insulation.
The green homes grant scheme will also provide free insulation to households in the lowest-income groups (you will need to be in receipt of certain government benefits). If you don’t qualify for this, the scheme will also provide vouchers for at least two-thirds of the cost of some types of insulation for homeowners in england. If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Not everyone is eligible and the system couldn’t exactly be called simple, but it’s been a cold hard winter so if you think you might qualify for a government grant to insulate your loft, then we’re here to help.
Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
Under this scheme, assessment is free and puts you under no obligation. Energy companies are compelled by government to provide these energy efficiency improvements or face fines, so you won’t be given the hard sell. But if you want to double check before getting someone round, here are the basics. The type of insulation that’ll be available to you depends on your property. Loft insulation fills the usually empty space in a loft by laying insulating material on top of the joists to prevent heat escaping from below. The recommended level of loft insulation for a typical property in the uk is 270mm, so there may be room for improvement if yours is dramatically less than that.
Beware Green Homes Grant scams

It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. You can also seek advice from your property’s energy performance certificate ( epc ) or from a retrofit assessor. You cannot claim for the cost of any advice as part of your grant.
If your loft is not properly insulated, you could be losing up to 25% of the heat created in your home and be missing out on savings of up to £155 per year on your heating bills. All private households qualify for a loft insulation grant of 50% to 100% depending on the existing efficiency of the property. If a contribution towards the cost is required, it will be in the region of £49 to £199. Loft insulation grant funding comes from the six main energy suppliers and is backed by the uk government. It is the occupier of the property who qualifies for the grant and they do not have to be paid back.
There are several schemes available in different areas of the country, you or anyone living in the property do not necessarily need to be over a certain age or receiving benefits to qualify. If someone does get any qualifying benefit it will usually mean automatic qualification, we can let you know and confirm this when you contact us. Qualification can also be based on the existing energy efficiency of your home, if your home is inefficient you could get a higher grant and be offered other improvements to reduce your fuel bills, keep warm and help the environment by reducing carbon emissions that are produced when we heat our homes.

As with our cavity wall insulation, we only install loft insulation materials that we know to be thermally efficient and therefore cost effective. The best quality, modern insulation will last for over 40 years with no loss of efficiency and no need for any maintenance. Therefore it should pay for itself many times over.

the energy company obligation (eco) is an obligation on energy suppliers aimed at helping households cut their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by installing energy saving measures. Following the spring 2018 consultation, the government set out in its response that eco3 will fully focus on affordable warmth – low income, vulnerable and fuel poor households.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. It may seem wrong to talk about insulation and ventilation at the same time. However, adequate ventilation in your loft is essential to prevent condensation. If condensation does develop and cannot escape, in the long-term you could have more serious problems with damp. To prevent this we can install soffit or roof vents in your loft if there is no other suitable ventilation.
It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.
You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.
Installing spray foam insulation will help save you and your household money every year.
