If you are on benefits or a low income family you will also qualify for a free insulation grant under the government’s energy company obligation (eco) and you not only will save money of your heating bill you will also have your insulation fitted for free!.
Loft insulation is installed on the floor of the loft. Blankets of mineral wool (glass fibre) are rolled out between and then across the joists. The latest government recommendation is a depth of 11 inches or 270mm. Unlike roof insulation, free government-backed loft insulation grants are available now under the energy companies obligation (eco).
If you’re anything like me then ‘free’ is one of your favourite words (along with ‘avocados’ and ‘half price pinot grigio’). So if you thought there wasn’t a way to make loft insulation exciting then you’ve obviously never prefixed it with the word ‘free’. Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. New properties are generally well insulated, for example, but older homes may suffer from poor loft insulation and have cavity walls without any insulation installed.

In some cases, an eco grant can be used towards the cost of installing solid wall insulation and even fund a replacement boiler.
Each application depends on your circumstances and the energy improvements that can be made to your home. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, party wall insulation, or suspended underfloor insulation is included in the grant either for free or heavily subsidised. The areas you can apply for an insulation grant in the uk are england, scotland and wales. However, depending on the uptake in different areas and supply and installation availability, limitations may apply over a period of time. The scheme is available until march 2022. Subject to eligibility aid maybe also available for room in the roof or internal wall insulation if the property is suitable and the householder is in receipt of an energy company obligation eligibility benefit. What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. The map below from the building research establishment shows the areas that are most at risk of ‘wind-driven rain’ in blue and dark blue.
It may seem wrong to talk about insulation and ventilation at the same time. However, adequate ventilation in your loft is essential to prevent condensation. If condensation does develop and cannot escape, in the long-term you could have more serious problems with damp. To prevent this we can install soffit or roof vents in your loft if there is no other suitable ventilation.
