Following the spring 2018 consultation, the government set out in its response that eco3 will fully focus on affordable warmth – low income, vulnerable and fuel poor households.
Good news – from the 1st october 2018, eco3 was launched and removed the caps on household income making it much easier to qualify for free home insulation 2020. As long as you are in receipt of certain benefits then the application is very simple. Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. For low-carbon heating systems to be installed, the property will need to have adequate insulation(e. G. Wall and loft).
How can I check if cavity wall insulation is right for my home?
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

Under the green homes grant scheme, homeowners in england can apply for vouchers worth up to two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of their home – the maximum contribution will be £5,000, or for those on lower incomes, a 100% grant up to £10,000 will be available for certain work. For example, if a homeowner of a semi-detached or end-terrace home installed cavity wall and floor insulation, costing around £4,000, the homeowner would pay just £1,320 – with the government paying £2,680. Doing so could save the owner over £200 annually on their bills and reduce their carbon footprint by cutting 700 kg of co2 a year from their home alone.
The only limitation on the delivery of the scheme is that you must own the property to be treated or rent it privately and have the landlord’s permission to undertake the work. Improving your cavity wall and loft insulation can reduce your energy bills on average by £300 per annum. Having your home insulated properly is also a requirement for additional home improvement grants like the renewable heat incentive (rhi) or the

What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. The map below from the building research establishment shows the areas that are most at risk of ‘wind-driven rain’ in blue and dark blue.
A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
Why has cavity wall insulation been installed inappropriately?
A grant of up to 25% can be claimed towards the cost of external wall insulation. Prices typically range from £7,000 to £15,000. Energylink can arrange a free survey and quote from an accredited local installer. Free external wall insulation is also available if you live in kw, iv or ph and do not have mains gas. External wall insulation is normally installed in properties that have solid brick or concrete walls. It can also be fitted to homes with cavity walls that are not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
If your household isn’t eligible for free improvements, there are still plenty of things you can do to save money on your energy bills. Suppliers can charge for improvements in some unusual circumstances. If the installation requires a lot of extra work – like putting up scaffolding for external insulation or removing old insulation – they may charge or part charge for the extra cost. The good news is that having the assessment is free and no obligation. If there are costs, you’ll still save in comparison to doing it yourself, and continue to save on bills once it’s done – but it’s your choice whether to accept them or go without.
