The eco scheme legally requires the main energy suppliers to install energy efficient technologies such as cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to domestic households in the uk. If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.

Free insulation grants are available to install cavity wall insulation, internal wall insulation, loft insulation and room in roof insulation. All private uk householders, in receipt of a qualifying income or disability-related benefit can qualify. We can also help with grants of up to 25% for external wall insulation. You do not currently need to be receiving benefits to qualify. External wall free insulation is also available in the kw, iv and ph areas of scotland, as long as the property is not on the gas network.
What free insulation can I get?
Some suppliers offer free insulation if you’re eligible under the eco scheme. For example, you may be eligible if you’re on government benefits. But suppliers will also take into account how much your home will benefit from insulation.
The green homes grant scheme will also provide free insulation to households in the lowest-income groups (you will need to be in receipt of certain government benefits). If you don’t qualify for this, the scheme will also provide vouchers for at least two-thirds of the cost of some types of insulation for homeowners in england. Neither british gas, sse nor scottish power currently offers free insulation or boilers. Some companies’ schemes are currently on hold while the legislation behind them changes. They are backed by the energy companies obligation (eco).

If you are on benefits or a low income family you will also qualify for a free insulation grant under the government’s energy company obligation (eco) and you not only will save money of your heating bill you will also have your insulation fitted for free!.

Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.

Roof insulation grants are available for some types of insulation. Roof insulation is either installed on the sloping part of a roof, typically from the inside, or in the case of flat roof insulation, it is normally installed from outside. Roof insulation can also refer to loft insulation which is installed on the floor of the loft and room in roof insulation, which is a combination of both pitched roof and loft insulation. Up to 25% of the heat generated in your home could be escaping if you have little or no roof insulation. Energylink are currently unable to assist with a grant for pitched roof and flat roof insulation but we can help with loft insulation and room in roof insulation.
If someone in the household is claiming a benefit, you could be entitled to free internal wall insulation for your home. The property must also have walls that are of solid construction type and you should also own the property or be renting it from a private landlord. If you are not entitled to a grant, energylink can still arrange for you to receive a free survey and quote. Please see our internal wall insulation page for more information.

Beware Green Homes Grant scams
Eligible households can apply to any participating energy firm – not just the home’s supplier – to get a free home assessment. It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. See below for further details. During a home assessment, your property will be examined to see what energy efficiency measures are already in place. New properties are generally well insulated, for example, but older homes may suffer from poor loft insulation and have cavity walls without any insulation installed.

the energy company obligation (eco) is an obligation on energy suppliers aimed at helping households cut their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by installing energy saving measures. Following the spring 2018 consultation, the government set out in its response that eco3 will fully focus on affordable warmth – low income, vulnerable and fuel poor households.
If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. The map below from the building research establishment shows the areas that are most at risk of ‘wind-driven rain’ in blue and dark blue.
A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
If your property is suitable you may be able to have a number of energy efficiency improvements installed in your home for free (subject to survey) including loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Boiler replacements are also included on this scheme (subject to eligibility). Blackpool council is working with local authorities in lancashire to help households access funding for energy-related improvements to their homes. It’s all about reducing carbon emissions. The gas and electricity companies have a legal obligation to reduce carbon emissions. This is know as the energy company’s obligation, eco for short. When an insulation job is carried out, the amount of carbon emissions saved is calculated. The actual amount saved will depend on the type of property – terraced, semi-detached, detached, etc. It also takes into account the number of bedrooms and the fuel you use to heat your home. These carbon emissions savings are sold to one of the gas and electricity companies. And that’s how it is funded.
