Cavity wall insulation ISN’T right for everyone

Some energy suppliers offer free insulation and free boilers to eligible households. Read on to find out if you qualify. You could save up to £130 a year on your energy bills by insulating your loft, and £150 with cavity wall insulation if you live in a semi-detached house.
wall
Both can cost hundreds of pounds upfront to install, so it’s worth checking whether you can get free insulation from your energy supplier first. Read about the different types of insulation available to make your home more cosy.

As with our cavity wall insulation in Adlington, we only install loft insulation materials that we know to be thermally efficient and therefore cost effective. The best quality, modern insulation will last for over 40 years with no loss of efficiency and no need for any maintenance. Therefore it should pay for itself many times over.

You cannot claim a green homes grant voucher towards the cost of a measure which has also had funding under the energy company obligation ( eco ). You can claim both eco and green homes grant as long as they are each for different measures – for example loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

loft insulation can last for over 40 years
savings of up to £395 per year (energy saving trust)
reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 990kg per year (energy saving trust)
typical payback period of 2 years in virgin lofts with no prior insulation.

Households can apply for loft insulation grants when they have an uninsulated loft space or insulted with less than 100mm (4 inches)
if you have a typical loft with a pitched roof, it is a high energy efficiency measure to insulate it. Insulating is a natural process for our specialists, we will make sure that no risk of frozen pipes or any condensation by making sure any pipework or water tanks are insulated. As the roof space gets colder after being insulated, uninsulated pipework could freeze.

What free insulation can I get?

Some suppliers offer free insulation if you’re eligible under the eco scheme. For example, you may be eligible if you’re on government benefits. But suppliers will also take into account how much your home will benefit from insulation.

The green homes grant scheme will also provide free insulation to households in the lowest-income groups (you will need to be in receipt of certain government benefits). If you don’t qualify for this, the scheme will also provide vouchers for at least two-thirds of the cost of some types of insulation for homeowners in england. Loft insulation is installed on the floor of the loft. Blankets of mineral wool (glass fibre) are rolled out between and then across the joists. The latest government recommendation is a depth of 11 inches or 270mm. Unlike roof insulation, free government-backed loft insulation grants are available now under the energy companies obligation (eco).

What type of insulation do I need?

To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

I already have some loft insulation – do i need to install more?
my loft has been fitted with floorboards – will this cause a problem?
there is a lot of pipe work in my loft space. Will your price include insulating the pipe work too?
how much will loft insulation cost?
what type of material is use to insulate?
how about the water tanks?
my ceiling joists are only 4″ (100m) deep. How will additional layers of insulation fit in between them?
do i need to provide ventilation to my loft space?.

Under this scheme, assessment is free and puts you under no obligation. Energy companies are compelled by government to provide these energy efficiency improvements or face fines, so you won’t be given the hard sell. But if you want to double check before getting someone round, here are the basics. The type of insulation that’ll be available to you depends on your property. Loft insulation fills the usually empty space in a loft by laying insulating material on top of the joists to prevent heat escaping from below. The recommended level of loft insulation for a typical property in the uk is 270mm, so there may be room for improvement if yours is dramatically less than that.

{there are numerous giveaways that energy suppliers are using. They range from cavity wall and loft insulation to new boilers. This is all part of the companies’ performance commitments to individuals who belong to particular groups of individuals. They are primarily for individuals who get particular benefits, like income-based benefits, pension, credit, tax credits, or universal credit. The whole free boilers and insulation guide has more info. nevertheless, the following is a sample of what you can receive:{||

{|while researching free roof insulation, i came across a government-commissioned website called simple energy advice. The scheme is one of the most popular free insulation schemes in the uk and allows households across the uk to have free cavity wall insulation installed to create warmer, more energy-efficient homes. the best way to see if you can get free attic insulation is to apply for a grant, but unlike boiler grants, the grant cannot be offered to cover the full cost of installing cavity wall insulation in your home. Those who wish to insulate cavity walls will receive ps250, while those who wish to install them will receive only ps100 or up to ps500 or a maximum of ps1000. The best thing about the free promotion for attic insulation is that you don’t have to have cavities in the wall that wouldn’t have been so easy to insulate.

The green homes grant means you could get two-thirds off the cost, so there’s never been a better time to consider it. Get loft insulation.

Although you cannot apply for vouchers, you can use the simple energy advice ( sea ) website to check what energy efficiency or low carbon heating improvements may be best suited for your home. You can take the questionnaire and build an energy efficiency plan to send to your landlord.

The uk government has introduced a new grant that allows you to save two-thirds of the cost of some energy-efficient home improvements up to the value of £5,000, or the full cost up to £10,000 if you’re in receipt of certain benefits. Act now – the deadline for completion of home improvements is 31 march 2021.

Homeowners and business property owners tell us about how much they save on heating bills when we help with insulating lofts and roof spaces. Do you want to find out more? green improvements are here to help with your roof insulation and energy bill savings. Energy efficiency is the focus for our qualified engineers and experienced installers. How does it work? loft insulation arrives in rolls and laid professionally by our expert loft insulation fitters. Rolls of mineral fibre rest between your roof joists. Extra layers sit over the top of the joist beams in your loft roof space.

Why do energy providers do this?

Working tax credit
child benefit dependant on income & dependants
if you do not fall into this category you are still likely to benefit from government funding, please enter your details in the insulation grant application form. The eco scheme legally requires the main energy suppliers to install energy efficient technologies such as cavity wall insulation and loft insulation to domestic households in the uk. If the energy suppliers fall short of their obligations they receive hefty fines. Some energy providers are lowering the criteria for eligibility as they struggle to meet the targets. This means that most householders are now able to obtain free insulation measures.

Fuel poverty can cause vulnerable and low income households to live in cold, unhealthy homes that are expensive to keep warm and increase levels of debt. Braintree district council welcomes the new local authority flexible eligibility powers for energy company obligation (eco) affordable warmth grant funding as a means to help address this issue. For further information on funding and qualifying criteria please contact the sustainability team on 01376 552525. Funding may also be available through other providers including your energy supplier, please contact them directly.

Eligible households can apply to any participating energy firm – not just the home’s supplier – to get a free home assessment. It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. See below for further details. During a home assessment, your property will be examined to see what energy efficiency measures are already in place. New properties are generally well insulated, for example, but older homes may suffer from poor loft insulation and have cavity walls without any insulation installed.

{they range from cavity wall and loft insulation to brand-new boilers. They are generally for individuals who receive particular advantages, like income-based benefits, pension, credit, tax credits, or universal credit.

While several major energy providers are not currently open for applications from existing or new customers, there are still some eco3 schemes open. The eligibility criteria varies and also is liable to change too – check before you request an assessment. These are the schemes open at the time of writing:
innovation guidance
earlier we mentioned those in social housing with an epc of d may be eligible for innovative energy efficiency measures to improve their home. The detail on these is scant and, really, it relies on energy suppliers wanting to participate in innovative installations as it isn’t something they’re compelled to do. However, providers can deliver up to 10% of their obligation through innovative measures that fall into two categories:.

Insulation grants could help fund much-needed home improvements. If you qualify, we’d be happy to help you apply for a range of home energy efficiency grants. We also offer finance arrangements to help spread the cost of installing your insulation. Depending on your circumstances, the new government-backed eco scheme could fully-fund your loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. In some cases, an eco grant can be used towards the cost of installing solid wall insulation and even fund a replacement boiler.

Grants for boilers and loft and cavity wall insulation for vulnerable customers are now offered through the ‘affordable warmth’ section of the energy company obligation (eco). For more information and eligibility criteria, go directly to your energy supplier or alternatively go to:
or contact the energy saving advice service website
the energy company obligation (eco) is an obligation on energy suppliers aimed at helping households cut their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by installing energy saving measures. Following the spring 2018 consultation, the government set out in its response that eco3 will fully focus on affordable warmth – low income, vulnerable and fuel poor households.

Government grants for free loft insulation and cavity wall insulation in scotland are accessible via the energy company obligation (eco) scheme. This is an environmental program which aims to lower carbon emissions by making scottish homes more energy-efficient. The uk and scottish governments have signed up to an international agreement which requires all included countries to lower their carbon footprint. Each government has annual targets to meet. These targets are achieved by reducing the amount of energy wasted in the home. Part of the plan is to make all homes in scotland more energy-efficient. Insulating your walls and loft correctly means you spend less money on heating bills.

How can I check if cavity wall insulation is right for my home?

To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.

If you home needs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £6,000, you will only pay £2,000, with the government vouchers contributing the remaining two-thirds. Agree to install an £10,000 air-source heat pump and the government will contribute the first £5,000 – or the whole amount if you are on benefits including working tax credit, child tax credit, universal credit and disability living allowance. To apply you must have received at least one quote from a green homes grant-registered installer. If the price seems unreasonably high, the scheme administrator may request that you provide another quote.

It may seem wrong to talk about insulation and ventilation at the same time. However, adequate ventilation in your loft is essential to prevent condensation. If condensation does develop and cannot escape, in the long-term you could have more serious problems with damp. To prevent this we can install soffit or roof vents in your loft if there is no other suitable ventilation.

A surveyor will check for any problems, but loft insulation cannot be installed if:
there is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted. There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.

It is preferable to install flat roof insulation from the outside. This would normally take place if the roof needs to be replaced but it can be retro-fitted to flat roofs that are in good condition. Rigid insulation boards are normally fixed to the roof and a weatherproof layer is then added. Flat roof insulation can also be installed from inside but condensation problems can occur if it is not installed correctly. We are unable to help with grants for this type of insulation.

You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we cannot lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you. There is any damp present. Loft insulation can help to prevent condensation, but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.

The main benefits of having loft insulation installed are:
prevents the heat generated in your home escaping through your roof
saves money on your heating bills. Insulating your loft can cut your heating bills by up to £225 per year (more if you are off the gas grid)
loft insulation reduces carbon emissions
loft insulation makes your home warmer during winter, and cools it in summer, getting the best of both worlds
improves your home’s energy performance rating
less condensation problems
loft insulation is insulating material which is placed in between and over the joists in your attic or roof. It can also be used to insulate your loft hatch and any water tanks or pipes in your attic space.

If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.

If you receive a qualifying benefit the government could provide you with the money you need to re-insulate your home, improve energy efficiency and save money. What kind of insulation will a grant cover?
there are grants available for several different types of insulation, and you could be eligible for more than one!
cavity. You may be offered enough to fund the entire installation but some people receive only some of the money and need to contribute to the costs. Who is eligible for an insulation grant?.

Installing spray foam insulation will help save you and your household money every year. The spray foam will seal air within the property and help prevent heat loss; this will make it cheaper to warm your home in the winter and help you save money every year. If you wish to sell your home in the future, buyers will find buying your property with a more attractive option. The savings begin immediately upon installation. Comfort
as our spray foam insulation is installed, you will find that your home is more comfortable than ever before. Drafts will be a thing of the past as they will be eliminated in your home. The seal created by the spray foam installation will help reduce cold and hot spots within the home as gaps are closed.

It’s all about reducing carbon emissions. The gas and electricity companies have a legal obligation to reduce carbon emissions. This is know as the energy company’s obligation, eco for short. When an insulation job is carried out, the amount of carbon emissions saved is calculated. The actual amount saved will depend on the type of property – terraced, semi-detached, detached, etc. It also takes into account the number of bedrooms and the fuel you use to heat your home. These carbon emissions savings are sold to one of the gas and electricity companies. And that’s how it is funded.

Get into the details of how insulation can save you money, energy and co2 emissions, and what different types of insulation there are out there and the materials used.
