If you are on benefits or a low income family you will also qualify for a free insulation grant under the government’s energy company obligation (eco) and you not only will save money of your heating bill you will also have your insulation fitted for free!.
To work out which type of insulation is right for your home, read our guides to loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Before taking up any deal, you’ll need to read the small print for each insulation offer to make sure you and your home are eligible. Companies typically need to be able to insulate at least two thirds of your loft space, and exclude properties with more than 60mm of loft insulation already in place. You may not be eligible if you live in a rented property, flat or maisonette, or a housing association or council property. Most deals apply only to people living in mainland britain. You may need to pay towards the cost of your ‘free’ insulation if you live in a particularly large or unusual house.
Loft insulation is installed on the floor of the loft. Blankets of mineral wool (glass fibre) are rolled out between and then across the joists. The latest government recommendation is a depth of 11 inches or 270mm. Unlike roof insulation, free government-backed loft insulation grants are available now under the energy companies obligation (eco).

Beware Green Homes Grant scams
Eligible households can apply to any participating energy firm – not just the home’s supplier – to get a free home assessment. It’s worth noting, however, that different energy providers have different eligibility criteria, and some offer home insulation while others are focused on boilers or other home energy efficiency measures. New properties are generally well insulated, for example, but older homes may suffer from poor loft insulation and have cavity walls without any insulation installed.

Who is eligible? edf customers who either own their home or rent it privately and have an epc rating of a-e. Your home will be assessed for suitability for insulation and whether you qualify for a boiler. You will need to contribute £240 towards a new boiler.
You cannot claim a green homes grant voucher towards the cost of a measure which has also had funding under the energy company obligation ( eco ). You can claim both eco and green homes grant as long as they are each for different measures – for example loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Your property must be of a size and structure that is able to create sufficient energy savings from the insulation installed using its deemed score. While we are offering one or more types of grant insulation, in some circumstances, we may also offer you a totally free boiler replacement as well using eco funding. What can I do if I have problems with my insulation?
A 2016 report by the building research establishment looking at cavity wall insulation in wales – where many problems have been reported – concluded there is evidence it’s been poorly installed, or installed in unsuitable properties in some cases. Problems seem to be concentrated on the west side of the country, including in south-west england, west wales, north-west england and north-west scotland. These areas are known to be particularly unsuitable for cavity wall insulation because of severe exposure to ‘wind-driven rain’. First check whether the area you’re in is deemed high risk. If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed. If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.

Suppliers can charge for improvements in some unusual circumstances. If the installation requires a lot of extra work – like putting up scaffolding for external insulation or removing old insulation – they may charge or part charge for the extra cost. The good news is that having the assessment is free and no obligation. If there are costs, you’ll still save in comparison to doing it yourself, and continue to save on bills once it’s done – but it’s your choice whether to accept them or go without.
It’s all about reducing carbon emissions. The gas and electricity companies have a legal obligation to reduce carbon emissions. This is know as the energy company’s obligation, eco for short. When an insulation job is carried out, the amount of carbon emissions saved is calculated. The actual amount saved will depend on the type of property – terraced, semi-detached, detached, etc. It also takes into account the number of bedrooms and the fuel you use to heat your home. These carbon emissions savings are sold to one of the gas and electricity companies. And that’s how it is funded.
